Make portfolio projects easier to assess

Show the problem, decisions, working result and limitations of each project.

Pick a small problem

Choose a small problem with a clear user. A reading tracker, accessible booking form or search interface can demonstrate more judgment than a large unfinished clone.

Write acceptance criteria

Write a brief before building: who uses it, what task they need to complete and what is outside the scope. Define a few acceptance criteria that another person can try.

Document decisions

Document one or two decisions in the README. Show the alternatives you considered, the constraints and the result. Add instructions to run the project and a short demonstration with realistic sample data.

State limitations

State the limitations plainly. Explain which integrations are simulated, what you tested and what you would improve next. Ask a person to try the core task and use their feedback to make one concrete improvement.

Show implementation quality

Include a reproducible setup, sample environment variables and realistic seed data. For an account-based application, demonstrate that two users cannot read or edit one another's private records. Add a test of the main task and document its practical limits.

Explain AI assistance

If you used an AI assistant, explain which parts it helped with and how you checked them. Be able to change the implementation and explain the data flow without replaying the prompt. A clear review process is useful evidence of your engineering judgment.
